On October 25, 2006, PED Seminar Series Presents

Inclusive fitness arguments for homogeneous finite populations

by Geoff Wild, PhD

Hamilton's (1964) notion of inclusive fitness is a powerful way to describe the selective advantage of many social behaviours. I will illustrate an inclusive fitness argument by applying "Hamiltonian reasoning" to the study of altruism in a finite population. I will also illustrate the connection between changes in inclusive fitness and the familiar probability of fixation of a mutant allele. Throughout the talk, I will highlight the key assumptions of inclusive fitness models of evolution. The talk is based on joint work with Peter D. Taylor and Troy Day.
